Fibre-optics are optical components wich use the principle of total reflection to transmit light along a path of any optional shape. Each individual fibre comprises a core of highly refractive glass in a cladding of low refraction. The beam of light entering the glass core is conducted through the fibre by reflection at the boundary between core and cladding (step index fibres). Highly flexible fibre-optic cables are made of bundled step index fibres. At one end, the fibres are bonded in a sensing head, at the other in a plug. The face surfaces are polished optically flat. A sheath surrounding the cable affords protection against Mechanical, thermal or chemical damage.
